Sanjaygawa and The Yak Whisperer by Rebecca Nordeman is a beautifully written, warm and inviting story of hope, love, and peace. This story teaches an extraordinarily valuable lesson that will allow children (and adults!) to ask questions and ultimately feel empowered to create change in the world at any age.

Being very far removed from little ones at this time in my life, I was reminded of how important it is to teach these values and morals to the children in our lives because they will one day become our leaders! I was also very aware of the important messages applicable to all individuals at any age. Whether you’re a 7 year old grandchild or a top corporate executive – there is a powerful message to be taken away from this book.

A young shepherdess – the Yak Whisperer, is taught by her most favorite and eldest yak (Sanjaygawa), the Tibetan expression, Tashi Deley: I honor the greatness in you. This is a beautiful yet concise and impactful statement.  I was so greatly impacted by the idea that when we are each connected to our Greatness or Spirit, we can become one. What a beautiful goal and path to peace throughout our world! As someone who is very new to servant leadership and just starting on a journey to transform my old ways of thinking and living, Sanjaygawa and The Yak Whisperer allowed me to make basic connections to lessons of servant leadership and help me to see servant leadership in a much more spiritual way, outside of corporate and traditional business applications. Oftentimes when you are not in an obvious or formal leadership position it can be difficult to understand and apply the skills of servant leadership. They may seem irrelevant or too advanced. The story of The Yak Whisperer helped me to see how servant leadership skills can be used in everyday life, both in and outside of the workplace, regardless of titles or position within an organization.

This is a wonderful book with an inspirational message: “Honor the Greatness in Others.”

“I believe that the call to “Honor the Greatness” in every human being is at the heart of what Robert Greenleaf taught — if we Honor the Greatness in others, we will serve them humbly and authentically”
